What causes watery and creamy vaginal discharge after sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My partner and I had protected sex using a condom and used the pull-out method entirely. But now I experience a watery and creamy discharge. My period is also due next week. So I want to know if I am pregnant. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

If you have used protection during intercourse, you do not need to worry about pregnancy.

Many reasons could cause these discharges. Some of them include:

1. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are two of the most common causes of vaginal discharge. Early detection and treatment with antibiotics are needed.

2. Sometimes it could be due to urinary tract infections characterized by increased frequency of urination, irritation, and lower abdominal pain. A urine culture will aid in its diagnosis.

3. Urethritis (a lower urinary tract infection) can also occur, caused by urethral damage during intercourse or masturbation, genital injuries, and irritations from soap, deodorant, detergent, or adenovirus products.

4. Candidiasis can also cause watery discharge and itching. A smear of the discharge will aid in the diagnosis and prompt initiation of anti-fungal medication.

5. And if trichomoniasis (a common sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite) infection is the cause, it can be detected using a swab or urine sample.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
