Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 24 years old. I had double protected sex with a lady three weeks back. I got tested the same day and it came back negative. I am afraid that if I may have HIV even after using double protection. I am feeling weak for the past four days. Is there any risk of getting HIV?
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can assist with your concern. According to your statement, you had a history of double protected sex with a woman using condoms, and there is no mention of broken condoms.
No HIV test can accurately detect HIV in the body immediately after exposure. The window period is the time frame before you can be tested for HIV and get confirm the result. Any window period may last from 10 days to 3 months to produce antibodies.
A rapid antibody test may become positive within 3-12 weeks after sexual exposure. At 12 weeks, about 97% of people can become positive by undergoing this test. Combination test or fourth-generation test measures both antibodies and levels of p24 antigen. This test becomes positive within two to six weeks after sexual exposure.
A nucleic acid test (NAT) can measure the amount of virus in a blood sample and become positive in one or two weeks after possible sexual exposure to HIV. As you had worn double condoms during that sexual encounter, and there was no history of broken condoms, you are probably free from HIV.
