What causes receding gums, and how can they be prevented?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My gums keep receding, and I have already lost two front teeth. For molars, though, I keep brushing after meals, but it has never been enough. I have also tried different toothbrushes and pastes and spent enough time cleaning my teeth. Unfortunately, I am about to lose other front teeth, and I cannot keep up, especially due to the expensive outcome. Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Receding gum and loosening teeth are signs of periodontitis. Periodontitis can be caused by poor oral hygiene or systemic conditions like diabetes, hepatitis, etc. As your case is a little progressive, I suggest you do deep scaling (ultrasonic cleaning) followed by proper oral hygiene measures. I also suggest you do a diabetes blood test (HbA1c). Please follow up after three days so I can guide you with proper oral hygiene measures and brushing techniques.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
