Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have attached the images of my inguinal region's skin culture. Could you please tell me about Sabouraud agar?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for writing in, and I understand your concern.

It is called Sabouraud dextrose agar. It is an agar specific to grow fungus from a specimen. It is acidic in pH, and its exact composition does not allow the bacteria to grow, allowing only the fungus to expand on the agar medium. Once the fungus is produced in the culture, it could be yeast or mold. After appropriate incubation time, we study it by visual examination of colony morphology. The colonies are taken from Sabouraud dextrose agar and microscopically studied using special stains like lactophenol cotton blue (LPCB) wet mount and the fungi causing the infection are identified, so that proper antifungal treatment for appropriate duration can be given. As mentioned, visual examination of fungal colonies and microscopic examination using special stains plays a significant role in identifying the fungal pathogen, thereby finding out the exact fungal etiological cause and proper antifungal treatment.

I hope this helps.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

Can I have your email to share the images with you?

Regards.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can see both images now (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). Is it in a hospital laboratory or at a house? As I can see, the faint growth of fungal colonies has started. It has to be incubated further for a few more days. It looks like a cream-like colony. It could be a yeast or yeast-like fungal organism. It has a cotton or velvet-like appearance. It is mold-like dermatophytes or other fungal molds. We will see this plate after four days from now. For now, keep your inguinal area clean. Keep the site dry. You can use soaps containing 2 % Ketoconazole and use dusting powder containing 1 % Clotrimazole.

Thank you.
