Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a scrotal abscess and went to the hospital yesterday for treatment. They lanced and squeezed a bloody cottage cheese-like discharge from the abscess. My entire scrotum is swollen like a balloon, very tight and hard to the touch, and reddish colored. I am on antibiotics, and they left the wound open for drainage. My question is, why did my entire scrotum swell to such an extent? I cannot even walk due to its size. I am worried that something went wrong with the medical procedure.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The scrotal abscess can be challenging to deal with. A drainage procedure was the correct way to let out the pus from your scrotum. You will need a long course of antibiotics to take care of the infection. There are many reasons for a person to develop a scrotal abscess: Infection to the scrotal skin hair follicles, orchitis, secondary to urinary issues, testicular abscess, which bursts and involves the scrotum, or trauma or surgery to the groin region. Please note that diabetes is almost always a confounder. It would help if you also got the diabetic workup, ultrasound of the scrotum to check the testis, and uroflowmetry to check whether your urine stream is not getting blocked.

Thank you.
