Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am dealing with dandruff on my scalp from a very young age. I have started getting similar red, dry patches in and around my eyebrows, bridge of the nose, and ears. In addition, they flare up on using any hair products. Is dandruff contagious and what is the treatment for it?

Please reply.

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and will try to help you.

I went through your photos (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity) and it is seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory condition that occurs due to fungus and excess oil production. It has no permanent cure, but it can be treated symptomatically. But flare-ups can occur due to stress, seasonal changes, or poor immunity.

I suggest you follow the instructions mentioned below,

1. Use a good shampoo and a combination of antifungal and topical steroid lotions such as Clobetasol (topical steroid) and Itraconazole (antifungal).

2. Use a medicated shampoo containing Ciclopirox (antifungal) and Zinc pyrithione (antifungal and antimicrobial) on alternate days.

3. Take the tablet Itraconazole (antifungal) 200 milligrams once daily after breakfast for ten days.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk with them and take the medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thanks and regards.
