Will sex before the day of semen analysis affect the report?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
In my semen analysis, the semen count is 66. But, there are 95% dead cells. Ultrasound scan revealed that I have varicocele. Can varicocele operation improve the quality of semen? I made sex the day before the analysis. Did it make the difference?
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
- Your sperm count is good, but the motility is low. If you plan fertility treatments early, then that will be better.
- What is the grade of the varicocele? If it is mild, then no need for surgery.
- Please get 3 hour glucose tolerance test also to rule out diabetes.
- You can start antioxidants in the meantime to improve sperm quality.

Patient's Query
Thank you doctor,
It is bilateral grade 1 varicocele. Can I impregnate normally? Do I need IUI or IVF? One month before the motility was 60% as tested in a different test center. It all changed in one month. What shall I do?
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
- Please get a sperm function test called sperm apoptosis from good laboratory. Repeat sperm count and motility with the same sample.
- From the result we can plan the treatment option. The test has to be done with minimum three days abstinence.
