Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently developed a sore throat then a runny nose and a sneeze. I have not had any other symptoms, however, I did notice that on one of my tonsils I do have a spot with red streaks around it. That side of my throat is what hurts the most but it is manageable pain. What could this possibly be?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I had a look at the picture you have sent (attachment removed to protect patient identity). This looks like more of a Chronic pharyngitis. The yellow spot you have pointed out is a lymphoid follicle which has slightly increased in size and is present in almost all of us as its represents the first line of defemce for the body. Infact the largest aggregate of these lymphoid follicle is your tonsil itself. There is nothing that you need to worry about as this is a very common entity we come across and is treatable. You can consider following the advice mentioned for the sore throat. Tablet containing combination of Amoxicilin 500 mg plus Potassium Clavilunate 125 mg one tablet three tiems a day for 5 days. This is an antibiotic and might create a tummy upset, if it gets severe, you can take a probiotic two times a day for next 5 days. Tablet Zerodol P (or its equivalent) one tablet two times a day after food 12 hours apart for 5 days (to reduce the pain). Tablet Pan D (or its equivalent) one tablet once a day before breakfast for 1 week. Salt water gargles at the rate of 8 to 10 times a day for 1 month. Avoid oily, spicy, and cold food/beverages. Keep sipping on boiled warm water every 3 hours. Drugs mentioned in point 1,2 and 3 can be taken only if there is an acute infection associated with pain while swallowing. If there is no pain or infection the medication mentioned in 1, 2 and 3 are not required. Make sure you follow points in 4, 5 and 6 as long as possible as this prevents the possibility of developing a throat infection. There is absolutely nothing to worry about the yellow spot over there as it doesnt indicate any cancer or malignancy and is only a lymphoid follicle which has increased in size due to possible previous/current throat infections.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
