Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

About 20 days ago, my fiancee and I had sex. When she was getting off, the condom slipped but my semen did not come in contact with her. Just to be sure, we had a pregnancy test after four days, and it showed negative. We repeated the test again after 14 days, and it showed negative as well. But now, she had spotting. Could she be pregnant?

Hello,

The only way to confirm her pregnancy, is to take the urine pregnancy test at least one day after the expected date of periods. If a confirmation is required, take a serum beta hCG test. This can detect a pregnancy, even in its earliest stage. This shows a positive even before it can be picked up by the ultrasound scan. Any value greater than 10 mIU/ml implies pregnancy. The urine test cannot detect the pregnancy as early as four days. The sperm and egg have to meet, form the embryo, move around in the fallopian tube for four to five days, only then, the serum beta hCG level is increased, and it is positive in the urine test. All the other signs of pregnancy, like implantation spotting, are not confirmatory.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Glad to know the issue was solved. To avoid such anxious moments in the future, I suggest you have a regular schedule of cyclical combined oral contraceptive pills? You could take any of the 21 pills pack. They are available under the brand names of Novelon, Ovral-G, Dear 21, Duoluton-L, Intimacy Plus 3. Take one tablet at night from the first day of bleeding, that is today, for 21 days. Then take no pills for 7 days. Then start the next cycle on the eighth day. Do not wait for the periods. She can have it for any duration with no side effects. It will make her periods regular and give you 100 % contraceptive protection from the second month. Taking it over five years will even prevent ovarian and uterine cancer, endometriosis, small fibroids and most importantly, relieve you of these anxious moments.

Do write back in case of queries. All the best.
