Why do I have swelling in my ankle after taking antihypertensives?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 54 years old, taking S-Numlo 5 and Supermet XL 50 twice daily. My blood pressure is 140/84 mmHg, but I have noticed swelling in both my ankles. Can you suggest alternative medicine I can take once a day to control my pressure? Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since you have swelling of both ankles, it is drug-related. Tablet S-Numlo 5 (Amlodipine) is sometimes seen to cause swelling of the ankles. Also, you have a long-standing history of hypertension, so you must do certain tests such as:

  1. Complete renal profile tests.
  2. Complete hemogram.
  3. Blood sugar.
  4. Serum protein.

I suggest tablet Olmesar M (Olmesartan and Metoprolol) once daily.

Since we are changing the medication, ensure you keep a record of your blood pressure so the dosage can be adjusted accordingly. I would also advise:

  1. Cut down on oily and fried food.
  2. Reduce the salt intake.
  3. Include fresh fruits and fruit juices in your diet.
  4. Take a healthy balanced nutritious diet.
  5. Cut down on alcohol and non-vegetarian food.
  6. Regular exercise.

Thank you.
