What could cause night sweats and hot and cold flashes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had an ultrasound done to check my thyroid. These results are copied directly from the report. It was mentioned that the thyroid gland is larger than normal. The right lobe size is 17 x 18.8 x 52.1 mm, and the left lobe size is 13.1 x 19.2 x 52.3 mm. Isthmus thickness is normal and is 3 mm. Gland parenchymal echo structure is significantly heterogeneous and rough.

A diffuse micronodular appearance can be seen, and the vascularity is normal. No lymph node in pathologic size or nature is seen in the bilateral cervical lymphatic chain. And in the impression, it was stated as an increase in gland size, prominent heterogeneity in parenchymal echo structure, and coarsening, primarily indicating chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis.

I did a blood test, and everything was normal. My only complaints are night sweats and hot and cold flashes. My doctor has now stated that no further action is required because the blood test results show nothing is wrong. Is this the best course of action, or should something else be considered? Is there anything I should keep an eye out for? I want to know why my thyroid is the way it is, but I do not have any symptoms.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Your reports indicate thyroiditis, and there is no specific treatment other than monitoring you over time, such as every three to six months, where you must repeat your thyroid function test to ensure that you are not developing any abnormalities.

In addition, you can take Ibuprofen 400 mg once daily when you experience any symptoms. Take only if you are not allergic to it. Since you have vitamin D deficiency, I suggest you take a vitamin D supplement of 5000 IU every two days for two months.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at icliniq.

Thank you.
