What is the treatment for wisdom tooth infection?

Hello doctor,

I have a wisdom tooth infection on my left side. Earlier also several times, I suffered from the same problem but on my right side. I took Amoxicillin 625 mg three days course twenty days ago. But now the infection is on my left side. What should I do?

You have not mentioned if the teeth have erupted. If it does not erupt and cause an infection, you may have to go for a minor surgical treatment called impaction.

If teeth have erupted, it has to be clinically examined for infection.
If the teeth did not erupt, then the oral mucosa over the impacted teeth (operculum) is to be examined for infection.

Provisional diagnosis: The provisional diagnosis is a third molar impaction or third molar infection.

Differential diagnosis: The differential diagnosis could be impacted teeth or an operculum infection.

Diagnostic tests: The diagnostic test needed is an IOPA (Intraoral periapical radiograph) in relation to the impacted teeth.

The treatment advised: The treatment plan suggested is third molar extraction in relation to both sides affected, antibiotic regimen after extraction for five days, and pain reliever after extraction for three days.

Prognosis: The prognosis is good.
