As a result, despite having adequate or excessive body fat levels, the main signs of leptin resistance are persistent hunger and increased food intake.

What Is the Function of Leptin?

  • Leptin's primary role is to assist in maintaining the body's long-term equilibrium between food intake and energy expenditure (expenditure). Leptin helps control energy balance and inhibit (avoid) hunger so that the body does not produce a hunger response when it does not require energy (calories).

What Are the Consequences of Elevated Leptin Levels?

The body assumes it has no body fat when leptin is absent, which leads to acute, unrestrained hunger and excessive food consumption. Because of this, children with congenital leptin insufficiency experience delayed puberty and class III obesity.

How Does Sleep Affect Leptin Levels?

The majority of people have a daily rhythm to their days. The implication is that they are awake during the day and asleep at night. Leptin levels often reach their highest between midnight and sunrise, which reduces appetite. That makes logical given that a person cannot do anything about hunger when they are asleep in the middle of the night. Leptin levels still depend significantly on sleep, though. All of the hormones, including leptin, are affected by lack of sleep. Being hungry right before bed might suppress leptin levels, disrupting sleep. When a person has a severe deficiency of body fat or daily calories, sleep deprivation can be a sign of starvation.
