Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I found out that I am nine weeks pregnant and I tried to have an abortion. In the first day, I took three tablets of Cytotec and two I put in my vagina. I felt some cramps but only light bleeding I experienced. On the second day, I took again four tablets of Cytotec, no insertion happened. Still, light bleeding was there. On the third and last day, I followed up with three tablets and inserted two. No heavy flow occurred but only light bleeding. This morning I tried to have my pregnancy test and still, it shows positive. I went to a gynecologist but did not tell her about the tablets. I only mentioned that I have light bleeding. I never told her because I was afraid. I had a transvaginal ultrasound today. Can you help me understand the result please? Is there any possibility that my baby formation will not normal? I am so depressed right now.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the reports attached by you (attachment removed to protect patient identity). The ultrasound clearly depicts that you failed in inducing miscarriage and the fetus is live and healthy with good somatic activities.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Is there any possibility that the fetus will be malformed if I have an ongoing pregnancy? Please explain to me since I want to continue my pregnancy.

Answered by Dr. Sameer Kumar

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Exposure to Misoprostol and hormones during pregnancy and risk of congenital anomalies have been studied and the results suggest that the use of Misoprostol or sex hormones during pregnancy increases the risk of congenital anomalies. So, it is not advisable to continue the pregnancy and Misoprostol is under pregnancy category-X, which is contraindicated in pregnancy. Even if you wish to continue, then you have to under constant ultrasonic surveillance with quadruple screen and TIFFA (targeted imaging for fetal anomalies) scan, which can indicate any anomalies, especially structural, in the fetus. So the call would be yours, but in consensus, pregnancy should not be continued. Please meet your gynecologist and discuss in detail and make an informed decision.

Regards.
