My pregnancy test is coming positive two months after abortion and I have occasional spotting. Why?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a medical abortion two months back, after which I just passed blood clots. After ten days, I had my period, which ran for ten days. Since then, I have been having occasional spotting. And I did a home pregnancy test which came out as positive. I do not know if I am still pregnant. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You are having some retained products of conception, causing intermittent bleeding. Apart from this, your pregnancy test is also positive for the same reasons. So I will suggest you get an ultrasound of the abdomen done and have a look to find what is inside your uterus. Apart from this, if significant retained products are found, they can be removed via a one-day procedure. If only minor products are present, they will shed off by bleeding. So do not worry, you are going to be fine.

I hope this helps.
