Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 22-year-old who has been suffering from back pain for eight years. These past few days, I have been experiencing a lot of pain in my back. I went to the doctor and told that my lower back has swelling. Is that normal?

Thanking you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You will need to send me a picture of your lower back to see the swelling. Till then, follow the instructions:

  • Avoid lifting heavy weights.
  • Avoid arching your back, instead bend your knees to pick up something from the floor.
  • Avoid sitting for long hours.
  • Avoid two-wheeler rides.
  • Improve your posture while sitting.
  • Try to get up from your chair every 20 minutes and take a quick walk around, and then continue working. Always sit on a chair with back support.
  • Do not get up suddenly from a sleeping position. Rather, turn to the side and then get up.
  • Take bed rest if you have severe pain.
  • Do hot fomentation locally over the affected area at least twice daily.
  • Apply Oxalgin gel (Diclofenac Diethylamine, Methyl Salicylate, Menthol) - for local application, twice daily.
  • Take Tablet Pregabalin 75 mg (Pregabalin) 0-0-1 for 15 days before food at 7 pm everyday, Tablet Ibuprofen 400 mg (Ibuprofen) 1-0-1 x 10 days after food, Tablet Rabeprazole 20 mg (Rabeprazole Sodium) 1-0-1 for 10 days before food, Tablet Shelcal 500 mg (Calcium Carbonate) 1-0-1 x 30 days before food, Tablet Vitamin D 60 K units (Cholecalciferol) once daily for 10 days, then once a month for 11 months. Take these tablets only if you are not allergic to them. Do not take these tablets if you have bronchial asthma.
  • Do physiotherapy, McKenzie back extension exercises, back core strengthening exercises, glute strengthening exercises, passive straight leg raising exercises. These exercises can be done initially under the supervision of a physiotherapist or learn to do it at home. Start physiotherapy once the pain reduces. Only regular exercises can give results.
  • After the pain reduces, the following activities are good for you: Swimming, Yoga, and Walking are good. Jogging, running, and weight-lifting may aggravate back problems.

    I hope this helps.
