Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a healthy 65 year old female. For the past six months to one year (approx), I have been getting up in the morning with lower back pain, and all around body pain. I teach yoga, so really I am fine. I have started doing some spinal twists in bed before getting up and forward bend at the side of the bed. This works wonders and I am usually good to go then. But what is going on? Is it my bed? I have gone through two different beds during this time. Sleep should be a restful thing, and one should get up without pain. Please help me. And thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Morning stiffness and pain following a period of prolonged rest are suggestive of wear and tear process or osteoarthritis. Wear and tear is an age-related condition. As long as this pain is not affecting your lifestyle (I understand that you wake up with pain but sleep soundly, also you have the insight to act positively to control your symptoms through yogic postures), we really do not need to change anything at present. Please get your vitamin D levels tested along with ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), CRP (C-reactive protein), and CBC (complete blood count) to rule out inflammatory conditions and vitamin D deficiency.

Hope this helps.
