Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have PCOS, and I had moderate acne as a teenager. I am now 21 and lost a significant amount of weight at 18, which has helped control my hormones. However, I have just started eating well, drinking 2.5 liters of water daily, and exercising again after lowering my standards for about six months. Although my skin was manageable before I started eating well again, it has become dry, itchy, and oily, and I have cystic acne on my cheeks, jaw, and chin, as well as some smaller whiteheads on my cheeks. I wondered why this was happening and what I could do to counteract it. Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

1. It seems you have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and acne. Both are components of SAHA (seborrhoea, acne, hirsutism and alopecia) syndrome.

2. If abnormalities in hormones or PCOS occur, it needs to be treated to get a permanent cure for acne.

3. For acne, I suggest you start using 1 % Clindamycin gel during daytime over pimples and 0.1 % Adapalene gel at night over the whole face for around 2 to 3 months. With Adapalene, you may develop a little bit of a burning sensation. So it would be best if you use it in small quantities.

4. For cleaning your face, I suggest using Cutiwash soft foam gel face wash.

However, please consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them and start taking the medications with their consent.

5. You must have specific dietary restrictions, like not taking spicy, oily, junk food, milk products, non-vegetarian foods, and lots of water that hydrates your skin.

6. Get a review after one month.

I hope this helps. Thank you and take care.
