Will my recently found diabetes affect my delivery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 36 weeks pregnant and was not diabetic before, but recently I have turned diabetic and am currently on Insulin. So my question is should I wait for the labor pain, or should I get my baby delivered through surgery before the due date? Also, does this diabetes have any relation to delivery? I want to get everything planned prior. Kindly suggest a solution to me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It appears you have developed gestational diabetes (GD). If you are already in the 36th week, I suggest you to consult with your gynecologist. If everything is fine, early delivery through cesarean is a better option. However, GD leads to multiple issues with pregnancy, fetus, and delivery issues. So I suggest you to consult a diabetes specialist also. In addition, the blood glucose levels need to be between 90 mg to 120 mg throughout the 24 hours for the baby's proper development and uncomplicated delivery. Please take care. I hope this has helped you.
