HomeAnswersDentistrydry socketMy extraction site felt filled with blood after my tooth was extracted. Do I have a dry socket?

When the extraction site is empty and without a clot, does it indicate a dry socket?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I got my tooth (number four) extracted. The extraction site is not really in that much pain, and better than the pain was before while the tooth was in there. However, it is now a hole, and not a clot like a dentist said it would be. The dissolvable stitches that he placed in my mouth also have not dissolved. Rather, they hang in my mouth from time to time, and my tongue has to push them into the hole again. I think something is off. I do not know if I have a dry socket, but I am concerned. On the first day, the extraction site was hanging down low, and this is because it was filled with liquid. However, I placed gauze on it to suck up some of the fluid, so it does not get infected. I do not have bad taste in my mouth anymore, but the first night I did smell like heavy blood in my mouth.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your question, and I can understand your concern.

Yes, it looks like the dry socket. To get confirmation from my side, you need to upload a picture of your healing socket taken in normal light. Also, please provide the answer to my following questions.

Is the pain feels like burning?

Do you have a foul smell in your mouth?

Does it look like yellowing or bone exposed?

Was there a day of full pain relief after extraction?

I can further plan the treatment and final diagnosis if you answer the above question.

Thank you.
