Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I looked inside my ears with an otoscope and noticed a white string-type thing attached to my ear canal and going all the way to the back of my ear drum. What could this be? I have pain in my ear, cracking and popping sounds when I eat or yawn, and so on. I keep getting ringing in my ears as well. I noticed a cloudy discharge in my ear too. Does my ear drum look normal? My ears feel very sensitive to sound also.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

According to your words and the attached file (attachment removed to protect patient identity), I think you suffer from inflammation in the middle and external ear. So this white thing may be a layer of wax that is not harmful at all. I recommend Ciprofloxacin ear drops. Augmentin 1 gram twice daily for five days. Tablet Brufen 200 mg twice daily for five days. Otrivin nasal drops once daily for five days. If the ringing continues, you should perform tympanometry and pure tone audiometry to evaluate the condition of your middle ears and cochlear nerves.

Patient's Query

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, doctor.

It looks like the white thing goes into the back of my ear drum. How could that happen? I also have a bubble in the back of my ear drum on the left. Is that fluid? How do I remove it? Okay, I will tell my GP.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The white color in your eardrum is normal. The photo is a little hazy, so I do not know if the air bubble is behind the drum or within the substance of the ear drum. If it is behind the drum, it would be a sign of secretions behind the drum. If the bubble is within the substance of the drum, it would be inflammation within the eardrum itself. Whatever the bubble is, I still recommend the same treatment. The act of chewing gum is helpful for you as it opens the eustachian tube leaking the secretions behind the drum.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
