I cleaned my ear and lost my hearing. Did I damage my ear?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I cleaned my ear with an earbud and now I cannot hear.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Most likely, the wax was pushed further inside by the earbud, which might be blocking the ear canal and the eardrum, causing your hearing loss. I suggest using Dewax or wax-dissolving ear drops, three to four drops daily, three to four times a day in the affected ear. Visit an ENT specialist for wax removal and use the ear drops with their approval.

The drops will soften the wax, making it easier to remove with suction or a probe. There is a small chance that the eardrum could have been ruptured by the earbud, but this would usually cause severe pain, which you are not experiencing.

The exact condition of your ear can be confirmed only by an examination with an otoscope.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
