Is it normal to lose 20 to 25 hairs every day or does it indicate hair fall?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a hair fall problem of daily 20 to 25 hair falling. Some hairs are getting thin. My diet is poor, and I have little stress.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I hope you are doing well.

Having gone through the history provided from your end, sudden hair loss may be due to multiple reasons, including genetic susceptibility, wherein there is a transmission of a similar condition from ancestors genetically due to hormonal imbalances, which are common during young age groups, especially in androgen levels which results in increased hair fall. Due to stress, climate changes, changes in the diet, fungal infections of the scalp, seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff, which results in hair loss and most often occurs due to frequent wearing of caps and helmets and sharing them with infected individuals as well. Sudden hair loss is also common due to intake of any medications for any underlying medical conditions, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, using hair products, including creams, gels, smoothening, and straightening agents, as well as hair colors.

As you have mentioned hair fall of 20 to 25 hairs per day they are usually not considered to be hair loss as a part of the normal hair cycle, which consists of three stages where there is a hair growth stage, a hair fall stage as well as a dormant stage where there is no hair fall or hair growth occurs and is considered to be resting phase. During the resting phase and in the hair fall stage, there may be increased hair fall for months together. As a part of the hair cycle, up to 100 to 150 hair strands may be lost on a daily basis.

My advice:

1. Tablet Follihair (Biotin) once daily after food at night to be taken orally for two months. They may be continued to be used for months together with one month break in between after every two months of intake. They help in promoting hair growth as well as reducing hair fall.

2. KZ plus (Ketoconazole and Zinc Pyrithione) lotion, may be used in case of dandruff. About one teaspoon of the lotion may be mixed with one third cup of water and applied on to the scalp. Massage with moderate pressure in order to release the flakes for at least one minute. Then the mixture needs to be kept on the scalp for at least three minutes before washing off. This procedure may be done twice a week with at least three days in between. They may be continued for months together.

3. Neo hair lotion (Ethanol, Propylene Glycol and Ginseng extract) may be used externally on the scalp in the smallest quantity possible of 1 ml. It may be applied to the scalp at night after cleaning the scalp well and drying the scalp well. One ml quantity of the product may be applied in case of excess hair loss only for at least six months. After keeping them overnight, they can be washed off in the morning. In case of a history of allergies, this medication may be avoided. Using the solution is not important. However, in case of hair loss, more than 150 strands per day, it can be be used in order to prevent hair loss.

4. Multiple procedures, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and GFC (growth factor concentrate) are procedures in which 10 to 12 ml of your blood is drawn and centrifuged in a machine in order to release the growth factors which are then injected superficially onto the scalp in order to promote hair growth and reduce hair fall. This procedure is done every four weeks for at least six sessions at a dermatologist clinic. Therefore, I would like to request you consult a dermatologist in person in order to undergo the treatment. Since you are only 17, you may have to wait till you are 18 years old in order to undergo the procedure.

5. Stress management is key. Along with the same, it is important to have a balanced diet including more fruits, vegetables, fiber, and at least ten glasses of water daily in a 250 ml glass size. It is also important to avoid oily and fried food, milk and dairy products, red meat, and sweets, which may sometimes cause an oily scalp and result in more hair fall.

As I have mentioned earlier, hair fall is due to multiple factors, which can be external as well as internal. Although external factors can be managed, the internal factors may not be controlled. As you have already mentioned dietary changes as well as stress, I would like to request you to manage stress as well as have a balanced diet which is of prime importance in order to reduce the chances of hair fall.

I hope the details provided help and did provide clarity.

I hope I could be helpful. Stay happy, healthy, and safe.
