Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently turned 19. I suffer from irregular periods. I did not have my periods for two to three months and then when I have them it would continue for a whole month straight without a pause. I have had the period gap problem for a few years now and recently started with these elongated periods. I have also consulted all kinds of doctor but never actually could find a permanent solution to it. Is this some kind of dangerous issue in my body? (Never had any physical relationships).

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

This could probably be PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), which is a lifestyle disorder and because of the hormonal imbalances it causes can lead to irregular periods or maybe even thyroid abnormality which needs evaluation. There is nothing to be worried about and it could be easily tackled and controlled. I would advise you to kindly get the blood tests and ultrasound and get back to me. Meanwhile, keep a track of your menstrual cycles of they get delayed by more than two months please consult your gynecologist for withdrawal. Do the following tests; complete hemogram, glucose tolerance test, HbA1c levels, lipid profile, RFT (renal function test), LFT (liver function test), Serum calcium, Vitamin D3 and B12 levels , serum fasting and postprandial insulin levels, serum FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone), estradiol, prolactin levels, Thyroid profile (T3, T4, TSH, Anti TPO) on second or third day of next menstrual period. Reduce weight (if overweight). Do regular exercises at least one hour daily. For lifestyle and dietary modifications consult a dietician. Follow up with the reports.
