What causes itching all over the body after sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 29 years old. My whole body gets itchy after sex. Earlier, it used to be random, but now it happens almost every time. My face, neck, chest, legs, even hands, and arms are affected.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

According to your statement, you are experiencing an allergic reaction after sex. You did not mention whether your partner uses condoms. You may be allergic to condoms or an added ingredient like spermicide that you or your partner uses. It is possible to be allergic to any type of condom, but latex is the most common culprit. Between 1 and 6 percent of people in your demographic are allergic or sensitive to latex. Additionally, spermicides, commonly found in gels, suppositories, and lubricants, may cause irritation or an allergic reaction. Nonoxynol-9, the most common active ingredient in spermicide, is known to cause irritation or allergies, especially with frequent use.

A skin prick test or RAST (radioallergosorbent test) can help determine which ingredient is responsible for your allergic reaction. Latex-induced allergies typically subside within one to four days. Your partner can switch to latex-free condoms, and you may also take anti-allergic medication to manage the symptoms.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
