Can postmenopausal jaw pain indicate heart problem?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife is 57 years old, post-menopause for five years, has pain in her lower right jaw at one point, throbbing pain. When pain increases, it goes to the back of the neck, ears, and back of the head. We have consulted a dentist and he has ruled out any dental reason, though she has some loss of bone under one of the right lower molar. Sometimes she feels little acidity and with this, the jaw pain goes up.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Confirm her heart status. The pain you are describing may be ananginal pain. Consult cardiologist for the same. Also, I can see the lower wisdom tooth X-ray you have sent is showing the position of the third molar is slightly tilted and is pushing adjacent tooth (attachment removed to protect patient identity). The root of the lower wisdom tooth (which is shown in the second X-ray) is incomplete.

Ask her to rinse her mouth with salt water twice a day. And I suggest you get lower wisdom tooth removed. Also, the upper left region has a root piece as I can see from OPG. Please get it removed else it may create certain bone-related infections. If it is already treated in the past, then save it with a cap on it, but only if your dentist suggests the same.

From my side, the pain is not related to mouth as it is including back and neck. Visit a cardiologist because much dental pain of this history is of heart. Wish your wife good health and happiness. Keep me updated with the improvements.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
