Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter is 10 years old. She is suffering from watery stools. This problem has been happening for the last 27 days. For the previous three days, she also felt pain in both the ear and head. We consulted a doctor, and he said it was vivax malaria. He also advised a medicine, Primaquine 7.5 mg. I am also attaching her medical reports. Is it a serious condition? How much time would it take for her to recover completely?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I saw the attached reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). There was no specific test report for malaria. I do not understand how the doctor diagnosed it as malaria. There is no need to give malaria medicine only on suspicion. If your daughter's activity is good and she is playful and passing urine well, then there is no need to worry. Also, start the Econorm (Saccharomyces boulardii) sachet daily for five days. Continue ORS (oral rehydration salts) and zinc supplements. Please do not start anti-malarial medications without a proper diagnosis. How many times is she passing motion now? Is there any history of fever?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

She passes stools 8 to 10 times in the morning and nearly 15 times in the evening. The doctor diagnosed malaria based on her stool culture.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I could not see any attachments suggesting malaria. In my opinion, it is gastroenteritis. Without clinical or pathological proof, we should not give anti-malaria drugs. If she has a fever, we can provide antibiotics per the stool culture report. How is her activity? Is she playful? How many times is she passing urine? You can give her the tablet Racecadotril for three days and Econorm (Saccharomyces boulardii) sachets daily for five days. Also, continue giving her ORS and supplements. You can consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and give her medications with their consent.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
