Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Last week, I fell and jammed my thumb into the floor. It instantly hurt and I knew I had sprained or jammed something. The next day, my palm and the thumb muscle were swollen with a painful lump. I could not grab or hold anything, but I can move it around. So, I know it did not break. It has almost been a week and is still very sore. There is no pain in the knuckle and I still cannot hold heavy things and grab things. On bending it is very painful. I wanted to give it some time before seeing a doctor if it is just a mild sprain. Typing and working is very difficult, so I was wondering if seeing a doctor would help or if it is just going to take time?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. Based on the description provided, there appears to be a reduced range of movement at the interphalangeal joint of the thumb, with no major fracture observed. However, there is a possibility of soft tissue injury, ligament injury, or a small hairline fracture. There is also a chance of slight dislocation of the interphalangeal joint. Ideally, an x-ray should have been done and immobilization should have been initiated during the initial stage of the injury. Now, after a week, if there is still difficulty in holding things properly and experiencing pain, it is advisable to get an x-ray done. If there is no joint dislocation, physiotherapy, along with mild painkillers and the topical application of painkiller gel, can be helpful. The thumb is essential for various hand activities, so it is important to pay attention to this injury. It is crucial to strive for full range of movement and avoid neglecting or delaying treatment, as it may lead to chronic problems.
