Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a mother of two daughters (less than three years of age). I am hoping to relocate with my husband and kids this July. However, since the day my father (67 years old) got to know that we would relocate, he has been behaving like a crazy person. He always cries, saying not to migrate as he cannot stay without his grandkids. He also says he will die with this separation pain and talks like a crazy person. How can I help him to overcome that mental trauma?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is difficult to manage a person at this age. At this age, it is normal to crave love from grandkids. They feel that they will be lonely at this age. They become like kids and get desperate to get attention from you. It will be helpful if you assure him that you will visit him frequently, once a week or once a month. You try to stay in contact with him through video calls. Please give him a meaningful schedule to spend during the day when he is alone. Encourage him to join some nearest NGO (non-governmental organization), senior citizen club, etc. Encourage him to keep in contact with his close friends and spend time on his hobbies. If he is severely depressed, he may need to start low-dose antidepressants. Otherwise, there is no need to worry.

I hope my opinion was helpful.

Please let me know if there are any further queries.

Thank you.
