Can non-alcoholic fatty liver disease cause high mean corpuscular hemoglobin levels?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I want to know can a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) cause elevated mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) levels in the blood test.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to the icliniq.com.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can affect the function of the liver, so mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) can be high in blood tests. Another reason could be a deficiency of vitamin B12, so it is advisable to rule out vitamin B12 deficiency by serum B12 estimation. Therefore, I suggest a complete blood count to check for platelet count and hemoglobin levels.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have attached the blood reports. Please review the reports and advise me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I reviewed your attached complete blood count report (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). The mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) value is borderline and not elevated much. So mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) value is not a concern. For fatty liver disease, I suggest you exercise regularly and avoid taking fried and refined foods. You should also include lots of fruit and vegetables in your diet and drink lots of water.

Thank you.
