Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

We do not have any current x-rays, but the local doctor thinks it is related to arthritis. It is starting to impact her walking a bit. Are there any exercises and medicines she should take? Pain killers work, but we want to solve the problem with compression-like heat.

How about taking Lyrica? Will that help?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and am sorry for such discomfort.

Kindly answer the questions to know more.

1. What is the actual history of presenting complaints?

2. Is it arthritis of the knee joint?

The query does not mention the symptom of the patient. Considering the age and difficulty in walking mentioned in the query, I guess it would be osteoarthritis of the joint, probably, the knee joint.

Please do mention the actual problem so that I can guide you in a better way. Lyrica contains Pregabalin which is indicated in neuropathic pain like nerve damage due to diabetes, etc. If arthritis you have mentioned is osteoarthritis of the knee joint, I would suggest the following:

1. Regular low aerobic exercise like cycling, walking, etc.

2. Consulting a physical therapist would be ideal for guiding various forms of exercise suitable according to the patient's condition.

3. Reduction of weight if there is overweight, as it will reduce strain on the joints and help alleviate symptoms.

4. Taking over-the-counter pain reliever medicine like Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, etc. However, continued and regular use should be avoided.

5. Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cream application.

6. Heat and cold packs application.

Take care. Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply. There is no other history. But she is finding it harder to walk for over 15 minutes. It came only over the past four weeks and did not seem to improve. Blood work was normal. X-ray findings showed arthritis, and the doctor suggested CT in two weeks. Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Sudden history of knee pain could reflect other anatomical structure problems in ligaments. I would like to know the following:

1) Does she have any history of mild trauma like slipping on the floor or walking on the steps?

2) Is the pain originating from the knee or hip joint?

3) Is there any swelling or abnormal joint mobility present?

I suggest imaging modalities like CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), giving finer details of the concerned anatomical joint and associated pathology. Meanwhile, since walking is tough, I would suggest rest, avoiding weight bearing on the joint, and taking a painkiller like Diclofenac once or twice a day with a local application of pain reliever ointment over concerned joint. I also suggest taking gas medication if there is a problem with the gas formation with the above medicine.

I hope you understand.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply. My mother will undergo a CT scan soon.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Fine, and after the CT (computed tomography) test is done, you can attach the CT report here, and I will try to guide you as well.

I wish your mother good health and hope to get relief soon from the present knee problem.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply. I will ask for the CD copy.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

After the CT scan, the radiologist gives a report or findings of the scanned body part. I am asking to attach that report here after the scan gets done, and hopefully, I will be able to guide it. I also suggest you visit and show the report to your primary care doctor for necessary guidance.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
