Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently experiencing trouble with my ear. Specifically, my left ear seems to have fluid accumulation. I have started taking a second round of steroids, starting with a dose of 60 mg for five days and then gradually tapering down. For the past five days, I was on a less effective steroid. Additionally, I am taking an antibiotic. Despite these treatments, I am still hearing a persistent hissing noise that is causing great discomfort. I have tried various methods to alleviate the noise, such as popping my ear, but nothing seems to help. My concern is whether this hissing noise will subside over time. Today, I had my hearing tested and it was worse than usual. The medical professionals suspect middle ear fluid and are attempting to address it with steroids. However, I am desperate for relief from the hissing noise. Is there any hope that it will eventually go away? I have noticed some crackling when blowing my nose, which gives me hope that the fluid is starting to break up. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Based on your description, it is possible that you are suffering from serous or secretory otitis media. If available, it would be helpful if you could attach the pure tone and impedance audiogram for further evaluation. In the meantime, I recommend the following: 1. Steroid treatment: You can use both topical and systemic steroids to help resolve the condition. 2. Decongestants: Utilize topical nasal decongestants to relieve congestion and improve symptoms. 3. Valsalva and Toynbee maneuvers: Try performing these techniques to help equalize the pressure in your ears. It is important to note that it may take a few weeks for your symptoms to fully resolve. If your symptoms persist or worsen, I recommend seeking further medical evaluation. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply,

I apologize for not having the audiologist report to share. However, I have tried doing Valsalva maneuver, and when I do it, I hear a lot of crackling sounds. My primary concern is the persistent hissing noise that I hear. I would like to know if this hissing noise is a result of the fluid in my ear, and whether it will go away once the ear fluid clears up.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Based on the typical history you provided about respiratory illness followed by ear blockade and tinnitus; it is likely that the symptoms you are experiencing are due to congestion and blockage of the eustachian tube. Once the congestion is relieved, your symptoms should improve. However, it is important to note that the tinnitus (hissing noise) might persist for some time, even after the congestion has resolved. In some cases, it can persist for up to a month.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
