I always tend to overthink and imagine the worst. Do I have a disorder?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I always overthink things that are really impossible to happen, and I feel it becomes a reality. I start to panic and feel like I am going to be crazy at any time. I feel like there is no safe place to go, and I am shaking. It feels like I forgot to breathe. I cannot even focus on my thoughts. It is like I do not understand what people are saying, even if it is a simple word. I feel fears eating the whole of me, but nobody will never ever notice me. I suffer from this panic attack almost thrice a day. When I was a kid, I almost lost my life when our house got burned. I have not taken any medicines. I am just keeping it to myself because I am afraid of what others might think. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns. Your panic attacks can be controlled by medication. The underlying cause of panic attacks needs to be evaluated. It can be that you were exposed to a lot of stress in the early years of your life while escaping from the burning house, etc., and it is showing off like this. Medicines along with psychotherapy like hypnosis do help in such cases. I may need to see an ECG (electrocardiogram) performed during attacks to rule out any cardiac problems. Revert with reports of cardiac evaluation so that I can help you better. Thank you.
