Can a decayed tooth lead to the formation of a lump in the mouth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am terrified of the dentist, and I have a badly decayed tooth with a small painless lump underneath it, right at the bottom between the bottom of the gum and the cheek.

It had gotten very tender before, which then cleared up with antibiotics. The small lump has remained even though there is no longer any pain.

It does not look red or swollen, and I can only feel the lump when I press it with my finger. I am concerned this could be cancerous.

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your chief complaint. There is absolutely no reason to fear cancer. This is a case of recurrent periapical abscess due to a decayed tooth. Antibiotics are used to treat abscesses and infection, but while you have used them, the acute phase of the abscess has subsided, and it has assumed a chronic form due to a decayed tooth, which is the source of the infection.

You are advised to use the following medications. Consult a specialist doctor, talk to him or her, and start the medicines with their consent.

  • Ornidazole gel twice daily on the area with cotton for one week.
  • Tablet of Acelofenac 100 mg, Paracetamol 325 mg, Trypsin, and Chymotrypsin 5000 IU twice daily for three days after food.
  • Tablet Pantoprazole 40 mg one time for one week.

These medications will relieve it in 10 days.

I hope this solves your problems, but I suggest you send a radiograph in the follow-up. If this is not possible, then go to an endodontist to address the cause, as a decayed tooth is the main source of your problem.

Take care.

Regards.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You can purchase it over the counter at any pharmacy. If he will not give it to you, you can show him an online prescription and obtain it.
