This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Four to five months ago I had surgery on my ulna and radius of my left hand which broke while playing. One plate got screwed in both bones. All was good but two days ago the place where the plate is screwed swelled. Is it normal or should I consult my doctor?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern. As per your complaints and the attached image (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), it seems that the particular area is swollen and red. I think you might be feeling some warmth over the affected area as well. This is a troublesome issue, it may be a cause of infection over the plate and screw. You should immediately visit your surgeon if possible to get a clinical assessment and early treatment. He will order some blood tests and may perform needle aspiration of the swelling to confirm any probable infection. It will require a fresh X-ray of your forearm too. If an infection is present, depending upon clinical findings he will start oral or IV (intravenous) antibiotics. Depending upon the severity you may require admission and removal of the plate. You should visit your surgeon at the earliest to avoid any complications.

Thank you.
