Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am six weeks pregnant, and I have a history of thyroid problems, for which I had homeopathy treatment for six months but stopped in the last two months. Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

From the reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) attached, you have hyperthyroidism. It would be best if you had treatment, but you must be on frequent thyroid function testing every four weeks and close monitoring during your pregnancy and lactation. Your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is very high, and pregnancy with this level can be risky for the baby. I suggest the following.

  1. Take Levothyroxine 125 mcg once daily early morning on an empty stomach. Avoid eating anything for the next hour.
  2. Repeat your thyroid function test after four weeks and get back for further dose titration.
  3. Avoid homeopathic medication.
  4. Consult and follow up with a gynecologist for any bleeding, as six weeks without thyroid treatment was risky enough. In addition, discuss with them and start taking the medications with their consent. Hope you do not have any other medical conditions like heart disease, and if any, please let me know.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I hope there are no severe side effects from the medicine prescribed. Please also let me know if there is any alternative medicine if I do not find Levothyroxine 125 mcg near my location. Also, I am attaching a picture of the medicine. Please confirm if this is the correct medicine.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

The alternative I would suggest is tablet Thyronorm. Take the same dose as I mentioned for Levothyroxine. Remember to place the medicine in a cool, dry place. This medication is necessary for life, and not taking it can be detrimental to you and your pregnancy.

Do let me know if you have any issues.

Thank you and take care.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
