Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had unprotected sex 12 days ago, and two days ago, I started having sex again but then noticed I was bleeding, so we stopped. I figured my period started because it is usually around this time. Well, later that night, I noticed that the bleeding had stopped and I had not bled since. My period cycle is usually seven days. My question is, am I pregnant? Is bleeding a little indicate pregnancy? Can you get pregnant a week before your period? I did take a pregnancy test yesterday, and it came out negative.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can see that you are concerned about being pregnant after having unprotected intercourse.

So assuming that you have not taken any emergency contraception and you had intercourse almost ten days before the start of your period. That would still be in your fertile zone, and you could get pregnant. The bleeding that you experienced could either be periods or implantation bleeding. I would also want to know how your normal period cycles are. Pregnancy tests would be positive only after at least two to three weeks. So right now you would just need to repeat the test after a few days and get a beta HCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) done just to be sure.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply,

No, I did not take any emergency contraceptives. My periods are usually very regular. Bleeding is moderate on the first day but extremely heavy on the second and third days. However, this time it got three days late. I have been experiencing menstrual symptoms (cramps, nausea, headaches, cold, and back and leg pain) but no bleeding at all.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I would advise waiting for a few days because you might get your periods spontaneously. In case you get your period, you can still wait for two weeks more and repeat a pregnancy test. If the test is negative, then you can take withdrawal medications to start your period.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
