Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 24 year old female. I am going to have sex with my fiance for the first time. In order to prevent pregnancy, what pill should I take? Are there any side effects of taking the pill?

Answered by Dr. Balakrishnan R

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

A condom would be a good option, as it avoids any semen into your vagina, so no chances of pregnancy. It also avoids transmission of any infections, not just STDs (sexually transmitted diseases). There are no hormones involved, your hormonal balance is not disturbed and periods will be as before. But if you want the emergency contraceptive pill, then I suggest you try using I-pill or Unwanted 72. These pills are a high dose of progesterone hormone, the same hormone which is produced in your body in the second half of the period after ovulation. This pill will suddenly increase the thickness of your inner lining of the uterus, making it unfavorable for a possible pregnancy to implant.

You will get your period or bleeding of the increased thickness within 7 to 10 days of taking the pill. This bleeding will be thick, fleshy, dark red or brown, with slight lower abdominal pain till the bleeding is really reduced. This has to be taken within 72 hours of sex, the best result is if taken within 24 hours. This may slightly disturb the hormonal balance and delay the next periods. But if the pill is not taken repeatedly, it will be fine within few weeks. If you are planning for frequent sex, I would suggest you try oral birth control pills or contraceptive pills like tablet Novelon or Ovral-G or Dear 21 or Duoluton-L or Intimacy plus 3. Take one tablet at night daily from the first week of periods, have it for 21 days, then give a gap of seven days, start the next packet from day eight, irrespective of whether you have periods or not. This pill contains the same hormones produced by your body, so no side effects, it will keep your hormones in control, will give you 100 % contraceptive protection. It can be taken for any number of months or years, with no side effects and you have nothing to bother during sex, sex can be unprotected. From the second packet of the pills, no protection is needed.

Hope I have clarified your query, do write back. All the best.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you so much.

What if I only use a condom? Will it be enough? Also, I hope taking an I-pill does not lead to death. I am afraid of it as I heard the side effects are nausea, back pain, and delayed periods because I do not want my parents to know. Can I handle the side effects of the pill? Also, you are saying by taking one pill, it would not affect me much. Will only one pill prevent pregnancy?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, I-pill is safe. I gave you other options as you always need to have all options open. Pills do not cause any serious problems, but disturbed periods will give you doubt if you are pregnant and give you all anxious moments. So I just mentioned. A condom is definitely safe, once fully erect and before being inserted into the vagina, it has to be put on and should be removed only after complete ejaculation and before washing it off in the washroom. Even the precum or pre-seminal fluid, a clear fluid that comes out of the penis before the semen, if it touches your genitals or even if it falls on your thighs, the sperms can swim up by chemical attraction and reach the egg. The OCP come in small bottles and no one will know what they are. These pills are also used for periods regularizing, not just for contraception. No one will know unless you tell them. Hope these tips are helpful. None of the contraceptive methods are life threatening or have long term effects, then no one would have used them or had sex. Have a great time. All the best.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks a lot. I will have safe sex. You have cleared all my doubts. Then I will start taking oral contraceptive pills within 24 hours, right? I will take them even if I use a condom.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You are getting confused with the pills, let me put it straight again. I-pill or Unwanted 72 is a single dose emergency pill. Both the pills are same, from two different companies, either of these need to be taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex. Dear 21 or Duoluton -L are same pills from two different companies, they are bottles containing 21 pills, which is to be taken cyclically to have month long contraception protection. They are not an emergency contraception. They are to be taken daily whether you have sex or not. Hope I am clear now. All the best, have a great time.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
