Is surgery required for my enlarged prostate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My prostate is enlarged, and it used to irritation while urinating. But after the treatment for enlarged prostate, the irritation has come down. I have enclosed my entire medical records for your opinion. Is surgery required now? Will eating fish aggravate my condition?

Hello,

I have seen all your reports (attachment removed to protect patient identity). You had episodes of Urinary tract infection (UTI), which was fairly severe with WBC (white blood cell) count of 28,000. The ultrasound shows prostate to be 2.01 ounces. Prostate surgery does not depend on the size of the prostate only. It depends on how much obstruction it causes. So, I need some information: Do you have urine problem? How is your flow? Is it continuous or interrupted? Do you strain to pass urine?Do you have an urgency to pass urine? Depending on all above, I can advise about surgery. You can eat fish, as there is no problem. Thanks.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I urinate 10 times a day, and seven times at night. And the urine flow is fair. My doctor has advised me to drink plenty of water. After driving my motorcycle, I got irritation in the penis. I do not have to strain to pass urine. Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest your symptoms will improve after prostate surgery. You can get it done to prevent further attacks of UTI also. Thanks.
