Does seasonal change cause facial swelling and allergies?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have an issue. Every time the season changes, my face becomes bloated, my lips become chapped, and my nose becomes wider. It resides for at least two months. Even after exercising, I experience the same issue. It does not hurt, but it makes me look weird. I am still figuring out what the problem is. Sometimes, eating peanuts also results in my face bloating for me the following day. It affects my daily routine indirectly. My appearance varies daily, but when the seasons change, this issue intensifies.

Kindly guide.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply,

Widening of the nose means an increase in the soft part of the nose. This increases when the season changes and stays for over three months. My cheek area also looks weird because of this. I have never gone for any test. I am not aware of it. It happens in winter as well as summer.

How do I check for reasons behind this?

As I told you, it does not hurt, but it makes me look weird. It has never been resolved. I work in the IT industry and travel by a two-wheeler. It also results in chapped lips. I have just gone through a test. I was not even aware which doctor had to be consulted. Yes, it has been happening to me for six to seven years, and it is not about changing cities because, in my hometown, I also suffer from the same problem.

I face one more issue. After gymming or doing exercise, my face looks bloated, and because of this, I have stopped it. Please help me resolve this problem. Regarding food, I have an issue eating eggs and peanuts. As far as I know, this issue happens yearly with season changes. I have no breathing troubles, either. Yes, when I exercise, I have negligible pain near my cheeks, and all this results in a bloated face. Bloated face is not the right word, but somehow my cheeks come out, the area under my eye comes out, my nose widens, and I have chapped lips, which do not hurt but make me look weird.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed the attachments (attachment removed to protect patient identity). You do not seem to have any significant allergy issues. You have hypersensitivity to an allergen. I would suggest you get an allergy panel test done. Also, I suggest you apply a steroid cream to your face, which will reduce the local swelling. Your nose looks fine; the bridge of the nose is a little wider. But that is a normal variation.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi,

Thank you for the reply,

I know this is not too much swelling, but it makes me look very weird.

  1. Could you please explain what allergens I am hypersensitive to and what allergy panel tests are?
  2. What cream should I use?
  3. My face looks chubby, and I have no body fat. Could you please tell me why my face looks bloated after working out and why it persists after that?

I know this is not a significant swelling, but if you can please help me reduce it, I will be very grateful.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I suggest you do the following:

  1. You should do some facial muscle exercises to reduce facial fat.
  2. You should drink plenty of water before working out.
  3. You need to take a high-protein diet and whey protein.
  4. You can get your IgE (immunoglobulin E) level tested and a skin prick test for allergies. The skin prick test will tell you specific allergens to which you are allergic.
  5. I suggest you apply a steroid cream wherever you get swelling over the face, like Betnovate (Betamethasone and Salicylic acid). Local application of the cream does not have any side effects.
  6. You should apply twice daily after washing the face and using a moisturizer.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
