Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I need your help and advice on the below issue. But first, please check out the picture, which I have attached. The photo with a yellow circle is the old photo taken four years back. Other photos are new. Even then, the lump was there, but it was very small. There has been a small lump on my chest for more than 5 to 7 years now. The lump never caused me pain. It is hard when I touch, but it is painless. There is no pus coming out of it. Now the lump has grown bigger. Please advise on the same. I would like to know what this lump is and how to remove it through medicine, either oral or tropical. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen your attached photos (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). It seems to appear that you have a sebaceous cyst. It is a benign skin condition and usually does not require urgent treatment. It can get infected sometimes but usually grows in size, without any symptoms.

The center punctum can burst open to discharge a thick, foul-smelling discharge on applying pressure. But then it will start filling up again over a couple of months. This is not a definitive treatment. However, to be sure of the above diagnosis, you need to be examined in person. There is no way to make it go away with medication. If you are bothered by the swelling, you will have to get surgery.

Moreover, a sebaceous cyst will slowly grow over time and may even form a dent in the underlying bone. Also, a bigger one will be more difficult to remove. Surgery for this condition is usually safe and can be done under local anaesthesia. I hope it helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the guidance. A few days back, I got the procedure done to remove the cyst I had on my chest. I am attaching the picture of that cyst post removal. Would you please explain and advise the following,

1. The surgeon did not send the removed cyst for biopsy, and when I asked if a biopsy was required, the surgeon said that a biopsy was not needed. Hope that should be fine?

2. Does the color of the cyst have any relevance?

3. I am hoping this cyst will not reoccur in the future?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is best to have this conversation with your operating surgeon. I would have had a different approach for cyst removal and sent a biopsy as well. I hope this helps.

Thank you.
