Can antibiotics help manage bacterial infections in semen?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 32-year-old man weighing 132 pounds. For about a month, I have noticed that my semen has become yellowish-gray. I recently had a semen analysis, and the result indicated that I have Staphylococcus epidermidis in my semen. What antibiotic should I use?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Bacteria in semen can reduce sperm quality, or bacterial toxins may affect sperm viability. However, it is important to confirm that the bacterial presence in the semen is not due to contamination from the skin. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a common bacterium found on our skin. Therefore, during semen collection, it is possible to accidentally contaminate the sample with these less harmful organisms from your skin.

I suggest repeating the test and also performing a routine semen analysis to ensure that your semen contains an adequate number of viable sperm. You did not mention your marital status or whether you have children, but I understand that you might be concerned about the change in semen color. I recommend following proper procedures for collecting semen for culture and analysis. If it is confirmed that the semen sample is not contaminated, we can then consider recommending an appropriate antibiotic.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
