Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I want to know why one side of my palatopharyngeal arch seems larger than the other. I noticed this about two weeks ago. I had a tonsil stone on that side around a week ago. There is no pain. I suffer from airborne allergies and allergic rhinitis. I have a history of asthma. And I have this problem of snoring at night.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I carefully studied the pictures (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). It appears that on one side, there is mild inflammation which makes it appear as though it is on a lower level compared to the other side. For treatment I suggest tablet Cetirizine 10 mg- one tablet daily for ten days at night, brush your teeth regularly at night, gargle mouth with warm salt water at night regularly. This simple step helps in preventing infection. Avoid ice creams, cool drinks, and carbonated beverages. Increasing physical activity and eating a balanced will reduce weight which in turn reduces the snoring problem. As there is no pain, there is no need for antibiotics as of now. Any further questions or doubts are welcome. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply. I am a non-smoker. I am wondering if the snoring is actually causing the irritation. Sometimes, I get an inflamed uvula, but that normally settles quickly.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is nice to know that you are not a smoker. You are very right that snoring does cause irritation, even infections. I already suggested warm salt water gargling, which is very helpful in calming the throat and prevent infections. One more important point to remember is to prevent dehydration daily intake of about three pints of water is essential so that the urine volume is more than one liter daily. Have water bedside and drink as and when you feel thirsty. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply. Is this snoring a serious problem?

Answered by Dr. J. N. Naidu

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Many persons with overweight have the problem of snoring. Gargling of mouth with warm salt water at night regularly, drinking adequate water regularly to prevent dehydration and even a small reduction in weight. About 11 pounds reduction in a year will be highly beneficial in reducing the snoring problem. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
