Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have stress, and I cannot make up my mind. And I want to solve my social anxiety. I am anxious to go through this program. If I am in a situation of seeing new people, I tend to skip them. I want to drop out, and I have no one there, and I have to stick there for 12 months. I do not want to go to sleep crying for being anxious about that program every day. I have talked to a counselor, and he told me that if I really cannot try out the program, he does not mind if I drop out because I should not be doing something that I do not feel safe. Of course, he also told me that it does not mean I should not face my fear. He gave me good advice. However, my class advisor talked to me as well and told me that the counselor was not good. She still asks me to try out for the program no matter how many times I say I do not want to. She then told me if I dropped out now, it would be selfish of me because it could be someone else’s place. But I did not know this was going to happen. I care about my mental health, and I really want to drop out. But my class advisor is making me feel bad, and that makes me really stressed, and hard to sleep because I keep thinking about it. What should I do?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I thoroughly read your query and understand your concern.

There are two things in your problem. First, if you have social anxiety, then we need to treat and focus on your anxiety rather than quitting the program. For example, if you have a fear of drowning, then you need to learn swimming and avoiding water throughout your life is not a good idea. Similarly, quitting the program will not solve your social anxiety problem but will maintain it. Second thing, you feel uncomfortable in the program; you do not like it now hence you avoid people and feel social anxiety. In this case, you need to figure out what is the case with you. If it is the first one, you should meet a psychiatrist. After the assessment, he may suggest you opt for either therapy, medicines, or both.

If you want my help, I would be happy to help you.

Hope this has answered your query.

Kind regards.
