Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My uncle had a stroke, after which he was not able to move his left hand and has weakness in the left leg. He had a high blood pressure of 210/140 mmHg, and now he is taking Captopril with Atorvastatin. What should he do? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. There are two aspects, one is recovering from damage, and the other is prevention of such episodes. For recovery, I suggest the best and only available option is physiotherapy. He should be encouraged to move his weak part even if he is not able to do it. Also, these should be moved passively across the joints. This should be repeated as much as possible, which will help the normal part of the brain to take the function of the damaged part. I also suggest he take the following measures:

1. He should have a healthy lifestyle, like avoiding fatty, oily, and high-calorie diets.

2. Have a low-salt diet.

3. Monitor blood pressure regularly, thrice a day for one week, then once or twice a week. If blood pressure is persistently more than 140/90 mmHg, then his BP (blood pressure) medicines should be hiked up.

4. Regular exercises like walking, if possible, according to his capacity, at least 30 minutes a day and five days a week.

5. Have lots of green leafy vegetables, fruits, and fish once or twice a week, and avoid meat.

I hope this helps you get back if you have any doubts.

Kind regards.
