Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 27-year-old female with thyroid issues and have been taking Levothyroxine 25 mg for the same. My TSH was 7.5 mU/mL before starting the medication, but now it has reduced to 3.5 mIU/mL, within the normal range of 0.5 to 5 mIU/L. I am planning to get married but worried that it can impact pregnancy. I get irritated often, so does this mood change occur after consuming the medicine? Also, are there any long-term side effects of the medicine?

Please give your suggestions.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

It appears you have had sub-clinical hypothyroidism while starting the tablet Levothyroxine (synthetic thyroid hormone), which, in my opinion, was not necessary. It could have been better if your doctor had chosen to wait to see if it was at the threshold suitable for medications. However, you can choose to discontinue it and then wait and watch. And I suggest you keep checking your thyroid levels by undergoing a thyroid function test every three months. Also, irritation is not related to thyroid dysfunctions. If you wish to conceive, then wait for normal conception to happen on its own. And there are no side effects of Levothyroxine if given to a thyroid hormone-deficient person.

I hope you find my advice beneficial.

Thanks and regards.
