Can high thyroid antibodies cause dry eyes and headaches?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had thyroid issues for the last three years and am currently taking 75 mcg Eltroxin medicine. My doctor suggested testing antithyroid peroxidase antibodies two months back as I was facing severe dry eyes and headache, and nothing was working. My TPO was 381, then the doctor suggested a throat infection test, which came back positive.

After that, I took a dose of antibiotics, which cured my issues. No, as I am facing an issue again in my eyes, so I tested TPO again, and it again came high, 386. Could you please guide me about TPO, what tests I need to do further, and how to treat it?

I have had a cold, dry nose, sneezing, and mucus-filled nose issue all the time for the last seven years, and no medicine could treat it.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I want to know what your thyroid profile report is. Is there any disturbance with your digestion, as it can increase the autoimmunity and cause antithyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO) to be high?

For now, I suggest the following treatment:

  1. Selenium supplementation can help bring your TPO levels down.
  2. Take a tablet Thyrowel once a day after breakfast for one month and then repeat.
  3. Use artificial teardrops such as Refresh (Carboxymethylcellulose) tear eye drops twice daily in both eyes for three weeks.
  4. Take green tea twice daily.
  5. Take antiallergic and Crocin (Paracetamol) if needed for symptomatic relief.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I have attached my reports. The current TSH is 2.1. I have no digestion issues. I have been using teardrops and lubricant gel for the last seven months, but no relief.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Please provide T3 (triiodothyronine), T4 (thyroxine), and TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) reports. I suggest you check vitamin D also. Take antiallergic tablet Ebast M (Ebastine and Montelukast) once a day after dinner for three days.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert with the reports.

Thank you.
