Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My left ear suddenly plugs up without having a perceived cold or sickness. Leaves me with a bit of tinnitus that stays for a couple of weeks. This happened last year while I was with my friends, suddenly my left ear clogged up and progressively got more clogged, and resolved within a few days. I also had temporary tinnitus though I was not sick or did not have a cold. It was a little disorientating at first but it happened ago a few days back. It had almost gone but the tinnitus is still there and seems like it is getting better. I am on Levothyroxine 137 mcg. Is there anything to be worried about? Kindly suggest. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern. Well, there are quite a few possibilities and in most cases, it is more likely to be benign. Simple conditions like wax or ear infections can cause tinnitus and blockade. Nasal allergies can lead to these symptoms due to secretory otitis media. Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) can also be one of the causes of secretory otitis media and consequent symptoms. In rare cases, inner ear conditions like meier's can begin with these symptoms. However since your only symptoms are temporary ear blockade and tinnitus with no vertigo or residual hearing loss, it is more likely to be due to serous otitis media which could be due to ETD or secondary to allergies. I would like to know: 1. Whether you got your ears examined this time or last time? 2. Do you have any other associated symptoms? 3. Do you have any residual symptoms? 4. Are you able to pop ears? 5. Do you have any recent history of travel? This may help me to suggest better treatment. Do follow up with the answers. Thank you

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response. Here are few details. The only residual effect is a slight ringing in my left ear. It went away last time. I just wanted to make sure it was not something I needed to see someone in person. My ear is almost cleared as well. Is there any natural medicines that I can take to resolve this issue. Kindly suggest. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If the symptoms are not that severe and self-limiting, you may not need to see a specialist for now. However, if the frequency of symptoms increases and red signs like giddiness and hearing loss or persisting and loud tinnitus develop you should see a specialist. For now, you may try maneuvers like valsalva and toynbee. Also, you can take antioxidant-rich foods, ginseng gingko biloba, and green tea extracts. I hope I have cleared all your doubts. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
