This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My LMP was on 27th of last month. Then, I had sex for the first time with my fiance, but it was coitus interruptus. Now, this month I did not get my periods yet and I have some symptoms also. My cycle is always regular. Do I need to check for pregnancy? When is the right time to check?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As your last menses was 27th of last month, now you are 3 days late for your menses here. But, as you had sex for the first time, there is all likelihood, that hormonal changes and readjustment of progesterone levels do take place and menses may get delayed. Considering that the sex was unprotected, though coitus interruptus (withdrawal method), still there may be a chance of pregnancy due to precum over the penile tip. The best time to confirm or rule out pregnancy with a urine pregnancy test would be eight days post missed periods, so you have 5 days to go. If you want to get a conclusive result as of today, then you may opt for a serum beta hCG test (human chorionic gonadotropin). If the blood hCG levels are less than 5 ng/dL, then you are surely not pregnant and your symptoms are likely to be PMS (premenstrual syndrome). Your menses shall ensue in a few days.
