Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been diagnosed with high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Should I take medication for high blood pressure (Telmisartan tab) considering my age 28, weight 68 and height 5.5. Currently my blood pressure is 100/138 mmHg.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for the query. Measures to control blood pressure (BP): Avoid smoking and other addictions. Reduce salt intake in your diet. Reduce fatty foods, junk foods, saturated fats. Avoid stress and anxiety. Do regular moderate-intensity exercise such as brisk walk for 30 minutes. Have proper night sleep for eight hours or atleast six hours uninterrupted sleep. Reduce weight even if weight is within the normal range. Drink plenty of water. Do deep breathing exercises and meditation. Measure blood pressure while you are totally in a relaxed state, sit for five minutes in a quiet room without talking to anyone. Your bowel and bladder should be empty before checking blood pressure. Avoid tea/coffee 30 minutes before checking blood pressure. Sit on the chair with feet on the ground, back supported, hand supported on a table, cuff at the position of the heart. Check the blood pressure and repeat it after five minutes . Then check the blood pressure in the other arm and repeat it after five minutes. During the entire period, remain relaxed and quiet. Arm with higher blood pressure readings is your blood pressure. You may take atleast two or more readings and an average of readings is your actual blood pressure. If these measures cannot control the blood pressure then have renal function tests, thyroid function tests, electrolytes levels, and in some cases, there are few more investigations to be done. If all are normal and there is no secondary cause of hypertension ( high blood pressure), then medicines are started. What is your lipid profile? Regards
